last week we set up an Etsy shop just to kinda see how it goes. both DD and i had past projects on there, but since there are like a gazillion people on Etsy now, we weren't sure if there was any point setting up a Kin Ship shop on there.

but, we gave it a try and so far we're happy with the results. people somehow actually seem to be finding us on there & we've been included in a ton of treasuries. i think this one has been my favorite so far:

we're super excited to be printing for the lovely Sue at Inherited Leather. it's the first time we've printed on suede and leather & we're really happy with the results. Sue salvages the fabric from unwanted garments, gives us the pieces to print on, then she sews them into bags and belts. she's been doing some collaborating with Kathleen Lolley (owl art below) and also using various found images. we'll prolly post some more photos, once she has sewn these guys into something.

an icy morning on thursday = the first weekday i've had off in awhile.

i spent some time looking at these photos from the Library of Congress. They were taken by FSA photographers during the Great Depression and were part of a 2006 exhibit called "Bound for Glory: America in Color".

in school, i remember lots of time spent studying black & white photographs by the FSA photographers, but I don't remember even a mention of color photos from the Depression. i think seeing this era in color makes it seem even more real & relatable-- and not just distant people living in an antique black & white world a million years ago.

and i love seeing all of those patterned fabrics and papered walls in color! so much to look at. these are just a few of heaps of photographs you can look at HERE.

Renegade Craft Fair

this past weekend we headed to Chicago for the Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Sale. we met lots of nice folks, ate good food, and had good times. here are a few photos from the weekend:

maybe next time we won't start our drive at 2am during the first snow storm of the year. but it sure was pretty...

we did a couple of craft fairs this month--Bloomington Handmade Market and the Crafty Supermarket in Cincinnati. there was a great turnout at both events and tons of supportive people & great handmade things. we were so busy we forgot to take any photos. dang.

but here is one of a couple of new prints we made for Cincinatti.

oh, and here is a new one of mr. scampers.

now we're busy getting ready for the Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Sale in Chicago coming up in a couple of weeks. so much to do and so many Thanksgiving feasts to eat!

we just dropped off a bunch of goodies at The Dandy Lion--across the river in New Albany, Indiana.

if you have a chance, stop by & visit their shop. they've done a great job with the space and in such a short amount of time. it's full of lovely handmade & vintage items--displayed on a great assortment of revamped found objects and fixtures. we so appreciate that these girls aren't taking the Ikea-boring-easy-way-out!

oh and visit their neighbors The Little Chef while you're at it!

My great grandma Opal had a Hoosier cabinet in her kitchen. I used to admire it while sitting at her kitchen table listening to gossip and outrageous tales. I had been on the hunt for one of my own for years now, but finding one in my price range (free) had always been a challenge--until one day we were driving down an alley and there sat one, waiting for the trashman. Five minutes later it was in the van, heading to our house.

As soon as we had time we sanded, sanded, and sanded some more. And then more sanding. The previous owner had apparently tried to refinish the cabinet, but it was a smeary mess of wrongly applied brown wood stain all over everything, even the white enamel top!

After Sand-tacular 2010 was finished, we took out the wire rack in the bottom and added a wooden shelf, to make it a little more functional for us. We also added a shelf where the flour bin would have been and reinforced some of the other shelves that were a little wobbly. We gave it a couple of coats of paint from we had leftover from previous projects. And then used a can of enamel spray paint on the table top and handles.

And that was it. Now it's in our kitchen and we love it.

And the best part is, the only things we bought for the project were a can of spray paint & a piece of wood for the shelf. Holler.

Soon we're gonna be printing up some tickets and posters for Cropped Out, a new music festival we're super excited about, happening in Louisville on October 1st-3rd.
In their words:
"Cropped Out is a locally and independently developed music festival set to take place in Louisville, KY on the first weekend of October 2010. The fest is designed to highlight the creative efforts of Louisville natives, friends, family, and fellow thinkers from Nashville to Chicago to Brooklyn and beyond."

Some of the bands have been announced: Magik Markers, Spectre Folk, Moon Duo, Julianna Barwick, Cave, Pissed Jeans, Sapat, Catherine Irwin, and tons more.

We'll also be playing the fest with our friend Brent, as Gangly Youth. Hmmm...maybe we should practice?

we love a neighborhood festival and today in our lil neighborhood was The 40th Annual World's Championship Dainty Contest. Hauck's is probably our favorite building in Germantown. It has that classic old metal sign & how can you not love a building that says "Lunch Meats" on the side?

We've Got Hang Ups

We're really excited about these ready-to-hang prints we started making a few weeks ago! We're calling them Hang Ups.

They're printed on canvas, stretched over a wood frame, and just waiting for a nail & a wall. Or just prop em up somewhere nice. We made this batch for an art show, but we'll have some more in our shop in the next few days.

Me & DD are in a band called Gangly Youth, with our friend Brent. We haven't played in front of people, but we have a lot of fun making noise in Brent's garage. We're putting out our first 7" later this month and over the weekend we hand-printed 300 sleeves for the record. Yeah!
